[2017 K-DRAMA REVIEW] Round-Up of All K-Dramas Watched in 2017

While I watched maybe one drama last year, I finally had the time to get back into watching K-Dramas on a regular basis in 2017. So fair warning, the majority of the following dramas are from past years, but I really needed to catch up on some. I’m now watching more recent dramas, so hopefully, I’ll be able to continue that trend in 2018. Anyways, here is my 2017 K-Drama review and rankings.

1. “School 2017”

I had never watched a previous “School” series drama before, but I’m so glad I checked this one out! The cast was really impressive, and the leads chemistry was especially cute. Put along a really catchy soundtrack, and “School 2017” was easily a big hit this year. Rating: 8/10

2. “Descendants of the Sun”

Yes, yes…I know I’m really late to this one, but better late than never right? I watched “Descendants of the Sun” earlier this year (before the Song-Song couple announced their engagement), and it easily became my favorite K-Drama. From the scenery, the acting, the two main couples chemistry, this show was all-around perfection. Rating: 10/10

3. “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo”

A friend of mine suggested this one to me, and I still get mad at her for making me watch it. The ending had me in tears, and I’m still upset about the way it ended and not having a second season. It honestly was a great drama with great actors, and the soundtrack was beautiful as well. I just prefer happy endings (don’t we all), but still really appreciate this drama. Rating: 9/10

4. “Cinderella and The Four Knights”

After finishing Scarlet Heart Ryeo, I needed a happy, light-hearted romantic drama. “Cinderella and the Four Knights” was absolutely adorable and funny. I’m still waiting on Jung Il-Woo’s and Park So-Dam’s next drama because I really enjoyed their acting. Rating: 8.5/10

5. “Fight My Way”

I’m a sucker for best friends to lovers stories and anything with Park Seo-Joon. “Fight My Way” was probably one of the fastest I’ve ever watched a drama. And, I think I’d have to name it my favorite of 2017. It also stars Kim Ji-Won (Descendants of the Sun) whom I thought did a fantastic job. The secondary couple (Joo-Man and Seol-Hee) annoyed me from time to time, but I did enjoy their story line. Rating: 10/10

6. “Suspicious Partner”

If there’s an actor I like more than Park Seo-Joon, it’s Ji Chang-Wook. I really enjoyed the story line and Bong-Hee’s character. She had everything in life against her, but never gave up. As for Ji Chang-Wook’s character, No Ji-Wook, his facial expressions were priceless. I always love Chang-Wook’s portrayal of characters and this was no different. Rating: 9/10

7. “Strong Woman Do Bong Soon”

And, the most adorable couple of 2017 goes to Do Bong-Soon and An Min-Hyuk. The chemistry between Park Bo-Young and Park Hyung-Sik was so good that they were even rumored to be dating in real life. The comedy in this drama was also spot on, and having Ji Soo star in it was a bonus. I’m loving the trend of K-Dramas to have the focus point on a very strong and independent female lead. Rating: 9.5/10

8. “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo”

I think part of the charm of “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo” was the two main leads dating in real life. Lee Sung-Kyung and Nam Joo-Hyung quickly became one of people’s favorites couples, and the news of them breaking up was sad to many. Nevertheless, this drama was a super cute, funny and endearing one that never failed to put a smile on my face. Rating: 8/10

9. “Revolutionary Love”

Probably the biggest let down for me in 2017, “Revolutionary Love” had the all-star ensemble it needed to be a great drama. However, the writing and story line made it fall flat in my opinion. It was really difficult for me to pull for Siwon’s lead character, and instead was rooting for the second male lead. Full review of this drama here. Rating: 5.5/10

10. “Temperature of Love”

“Temperature of Love” started out as a great drama, but somewhere around episode 30, I found myself wanting the show to just get to the point instead of going in circles. The chemistry between Seo Hyun-Jin’s and Yang Se-Jong’s characters was undeniable, but the writing left a little to be desired. I also wanted a little more complexity and story line for the secondary character, Jung-Woo, since Kim Jae-Wook is such a great actor. Full review of this drama here. Rating: 6/10

11. “The Package”

Possibly the most underrated drama of 2017, “The Package” was a wonderful story of a package trip through France diving into the stories of each couple. I believe Jung Yong-Hwa’s performance was one of his best and paired perfectly with Lee Yeon-Hee’s tour guide character, Yoon So-So. The writing and plot development is part of why “The Package” became one of my favorites of 2017. Full review of this drama here. Rating: 8.5/10

12. “Cheese In The Trap”

I don’t think I have ever been as disappointed in a drama ending as I was for “Cheese In The Trap.” Honestly, I was upset about spending so much time invested in the characters for the ending that they were written. The stand out character and actor was by far Seo Kang-Joon portraying Baek In-Ho. I’m hoping the movie version will be much better. Rating: 5/10

13. “Another Oh Hae Young”

I have a love-hate relationship with “Another Oh Hae Young”. There were times I loved it due to Eric’s and Seo Hyun-Jin’s great performances. And others, when the drama seemed a little on the silly side. Overall, I did enjoy this drama, but probably not as much as many other did. Rating: 6.5/10

14. “W – Two Worlds”

“W-Two Worlds” is still my favorite Lee Jong-Suk drama to date (While You Were Sleeping is a very close 2nd but I haven’t finished watching it yet). Jong-Suk has a way of making you fall in love with every single one of his characters. However, the story of “W” was the most imaginative yet mind-boggling K-Drama I’ve watched. And, I loved every second of it. Rating: 9.5/10

Currently Airing and Watching

1. “I’m Not A Robot”

If you’re wanting a cute romantic comedy, look no further. “I’m Not A Robot” has great writing filled with just the right balance between drama and comedy. I still don’t know how it isn’t obvious to Yoo Seung-Ho that Jo Ji-Ah isn’t a robot, but I’m loving it nonetheless.

2. “Just Between Lovers”

I am absolutely in love with “Just Between Lovers”. It is the perfect melodrama with the perfect actors. 2PM’s Junho and Won Jin-Ah continue to impress me each and every episode. Their portrayal of characters and chemistry is exactly what I love about Korean dramas. Junho has the bad-boy image yet sensitive on the inside role nailed down. If you aren’t watching this one, I suggest you do so as soon as possible.

You got in a lot of really good ones this year! My favorite of your list would have to be Scarlet Heart. Truly an amazing drama in every way! Also loved Suspicious Partner, W, DOTS, Cinderella, and The Package. And mostly good feelings for SWDBS, Cheese in the Trap, and Weightlifting Fairy.

I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying I’m Not a Robot and Just Between Lovers. Those two are my most anticipated dramas on my January watch list. I have a few more weeks before I plan to start them, but I can’t wait! Happy New Year!!
